The Last Friday of Summer
Louisville has some wonderful patios for drinking wine in the summer. Here are my three favorites:
North End Cafe. An interesting little list, a good cheese plate and inventive menu, and it’s usually busy enough to be interesting without being crowded.
The Bristol in Prospect. The Bristol on Bardstown Road has a nice outdoor area, but I prefer Prospect’s. Under the awning for protection from a hot sun, with a good by-the-glass list and some great bargains on bottles.
Le Relais. A deck overlooking Bowman Field, a decent list and bistro fare. Get Anthony involved in your wine selection and don’t limit yourself to familiar domestics.
There’s also no better people-watching scene on a summer night than Captain’s Quarters. The wine list isn’t much, but you can sit back and enjoy the drama playing-out on the lawn between the docks and the raucous outdoor bar.
A few years back, Robin Garr ran a poll of people’s favorite outdoor hangs. It’s a little out of date — Azalea and Rockwall are both gone — but it’s helpful nonetheless.
The weather channel says it’s going to be 79 degrees and clear at 7 tonight. Take advantage; it may be your last chance.

Not a big wine list, but the roof deck of the Monkey Wrench is a fun place too. Tuesday night 2 for 1 burgers is a heck of a deal. Good too!
