This Explains a Lot of What Went On When Pliny Was Younger
“It is to wine that we men are indebted for being the only animated beings that drink without being thirsty.”
Pliny the Elder, 77AD

“animated beings” It brings up such images of youth…

We can’t take Pliny as a credible source. He drank his wine mixed with pine resin and seawater. The closest modern equivalent to that is Cristal and AlizĂ©.

That he drank repulsive wine doesn’t undermine in the least what he was saying. In fact, it reinforces it. Plny writes about wine so old it had to be chipped out of the jug and dissolved in water. If that’s enough to inspire people to drink when they’re not thirsty, imagine how much he would have enjoyed even so humble a quaff as [Yellow Tail].

Tom,
It’s the alcohol that people crave…

But the alcohol would be the first thing to evaporate, so there must have been something else amongst Pliny and his peeps.
