Some Guy in a Bowling Shirt Throws a Surprise Left

Writing in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, where my former sister-in-law works, Chris Ballard asserts:

Beer is More Sophisticated Than Wine

His evidence?

There are more ingredients in a bottle of beer than a glass of wine.

Given that pure wines have nothing in them but grapes, yeast and barrel residue, there are a lot of things more sophisticated than wine. Raisin cookies, for example.

I’ll grant that beer is complicated, and that there are people who take it very seriously. I’ll even grudgingly accept that beer is worthy of more respect than it generally gets. But there isn’t a comestible in the world that is able to bring to a single serving the depth of history and heritage that wine can.

Also, people drinking beer burp more.

I have recently gained a huge respect for beer, as much as I have for wine. The complexities and differences of each beer are amazing to me, and I have been trying to introduce my customers to new and different beers each month.

However, until the argument at most of our bars shifts away from Bud vs. Miller, the American beer scene will remain one of the furthest away from sophistication that we have.
