As a result of what one spokesman for the French government described as behavior “incompatible with the professional conduct required of a French diplomat,” the French Consul in Hong Kong has been recalled to Paris after stealing two rare bottles of wine from a private club.
Hong Kong media reports say the wine bottles were worth up to 5,000 euros. Mr Fonbaustier apparently hid them in his trousers before removing them from the restaurant, the French newspaper Le Monde said, quoting sources close to the case.
For the record, French diplomats draw the behavioral line at stealing shrimp from the buffet and bedding the wives of local businessmen. Beyond that, well, a nation has to have its standards.
